GREY’S ANATOMY “Don’t Deceive Me (Please Don’t Go) Review

This week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy dealt with the preservation of life both at the beginning and at the end. As Callie, Mark and Arizona deal with Callie’s irrational fear that she is losing the baby (with the introduction of the new OB/GYN), Derek and Karev begin the Alzheimer’s trials to see if they can stop the aging process. It was quite the contrast to see three people celebrating new life while watching two spouses deal with the possibility that their spouses, although still alive, will be dead to them, so to speak.

I am with Karev. How emotionally draining would it be to work on a clinical for two years with so many people and so many desperate spouses, half of which only get placebos? I do not think the placebo effect works so well on this type of patient. Although I was expecting the second patient’s directive to be a placebo, it was still so sad when I read it. Karev is also right about Meredith. It does take a special person to deal with patients in the clinical, although I do not necessarily agree about the twisted part.

The race for chief resident is on, and everyone is looking to get to the top, except for maybe Meredith. Calli, Arizona, and Mark have to deal with Calli’s pregnancy, and Derek starts a new Alzheimers clinical trial. Meanwhile, Bailey jumps on the social networking bandwagon with surgery tweets.

Overall, this was an entertaining episode. I tend to like episodes where every patient isn’t having some ever so relatable problem to the doctors’ problems, and this episode delivered that. I wasn’t entirely surprised that Derek wanted to leave Meredith out of his clinical trial, but I understood where he was coming from. Still, he’s better off with the realization that she needs to be in. The break from the ongoing pregnancy drama was a welcome one.

Christina playing Avery was classic Christina. She’s back! After that long hiatus of true Christina-ness, I loved seeing her back to scheming. I’d really like to see some expanding on the chief resident race, especially between Yang and Karev. They are easily the most competitive, and they bring some fun to Seattle Grace.

Speaking of fun, how much fun is Bailey tweeting surgeries? Okay, it doesn’t sound so great, but the Chief’s reaction made it worth it. I liked seeing twitter thrown in, even though there is a small chance of them continuing that habit. They did a good (if blatant) job of trying to show Twitter as a tool for learning without geography getting in the way.

Let’s talk Twitter. Do you think Twitter paid for all of that talk? I get the idea of showing how new social media can be used in businesses, even hospitals. However, it seemed that it was talked about incessantly, especially Owen’s lecture about how the government uses it with GPS. It was great that the tweeting saved their patient’s life and that the Chief got hooked so quickly (although I still don’t think he gets the actual concept), but I am not sure how I feel about a surgeon tweeting during surgery. Although the surgeon isn’t doing the typing, isn’t it still distracting? What do you think?

Other things I liked about this episode was how willing Arizona was to be “in” Callie’s plan even though she did not have enough time to process everything that had happened and was still angry at Callie. That is love. Unfortunately, I don’t think Sloan is going to find the same from Lexi. They just got over the last baby issue. I am upset because I love Mark and Lexi together.

I liked how Christina played Avery. Shame on him for hitting so low. Also, it appears that Christina’s experience turned her into a more sensitive physician with an actual bedside manner. If that sticks around, she will be a top surgeon in no time!

What did you think of tonight’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy? Do you think it was a good idea for Derek to recruit Meredith to help him on the clinical trials? Do you think Lexi will ever forgive Mark? What was your favorite quote? Mine is a toss up between “I am a hormone casserole” and “Don’t wait until this kid comes out all Sloanie”, both courtesy of Callie.
